Chocolat

Author: Joanne Harris
Publisher: Black Swan
Publication date: 1999

Essentially
A foreign woman and her daughter opens a chocolate shop in a small town in France during Lent, the period of self-denial, much to the annoyance of the local priest.

Why I love it
The descriptions of chocolate, the strength of Vianne Rocher, the absurd hypocrisy of a holier-than-thou priest, the message of tolerance the story champions, I absolutely love this book and what it stands for.
