Gilead

Author: Marilynne Robinson
Published by Virago
Publication Year: 2004

Essentially
An elderly, dying  priest writes about his life in a journal for his young son, talking about his childhood, the male members of his family, his friendships, his love for his young wife and his wonder for life.

Why I like it
When I realised the book is about a preacher, I almost put it down. But Robinson’s words created beautiful imagery and Ames, the preacher is wholesome and tries very hard not to be judgmental. I love how he cherishes the simple things in life.
